Welcome to Operation Crane
Operation Crane is an ongoing investigation into suicides within the construction industry. Our aim is to detect patterns of behaviour and circumstance in the hope of identifying opportunities for meaningful change.
This page was originally intended to provide regular updates on our progress. However, due to the rapid pace of our work, we believe it will be more valuable to share the full report once completed — which we hope to publish by the end of July 2025.
Already, we have learned a great deal. We’ve identified several areas where improvements could be made to better support those working in construction who find themselves in difficult or overwhelming circumstances.
It’s important to understand that Stage 1 of Operation Crane takes a broad, generalist approach. At this point, we do not yet have the depth of personal insight required to build detailed profiles of those who have sadly taken their own lives, or, equally, of those who have managed to pull back from the brink. What helped them hold on? Was it the love of a partner, a parent, or a child?

Stage 2 will focus on those individual stories. It will explore personal tragedies and begin to build behavioural and situational profiles. But we can only do this if enough people are willing to share their experiences.
There are two surveys available on this page:
-
One for those who found a way back from crisis.
-
One for those who knew someone who lost their life to suicide.
We believe this work can make a real difference. With your help, it can make an even bigger one.
Thank you.
