MDMA has become a popular drug, in part because of the positive effects that a person may think they are experiencing within an hour or so after taking a single dose such as mental stimulation, emotional warmth, empathy toward others, a general sense of well being, and decreased anxiety. In addition, users report enhanced sensory perception as a hallmark of the MDMA experience. However, like all illicit drugs, these positive feelings are short lived and result in personal destruction.
MDMA is often used by young adults in nightclubs / dance environments because of its association with vigorous physical activity for extended periods. This can cause a sharp rise in body temperature (Hyperthermia) which requires urgent medical attention because it will lead to muscle breakdown and heart failure, which can lead to kidney failure and death. MDMA can also reduce the pumping efficiency of the heart which is particularly dangerous during periods of activity such as dancing.
