Attempting to Understand Suicides in the Construction Industry
The Crane Report: Session 2

As a continuation of The Crane Report, we’re launching a survey for families and friends who have lost someone to suicide in the construction community, as well as for those who have found the way back; and we want to explain what we’re asking, and why.
When someone dies in a site accident, the industry looks closely at what happened. But when a worker dies by suicide, the story behind it is rarely explored. That means we still do not understand how work, stress, and life pressures may connect. Was this tragedy "because of" their work, "related to it," or due to other "external factors?"
Your perspective can help us understand the bigger picture. You may have noticed shifts in mood, behaviour, routines, or pressures in the months before their passing; pieces of a picture only those close to them could possibly see. By sharing what you feel able to, you can help us identify patterns we simply cannot learn any other way.
We know this is a deeply personal and emotional request, and you should only take part if it feels right for you. The survey is completely anonymous and does not ask for any identifying information. Everything you share will be treated with care and respect.
Our goal is to learn enough to prevent future loss, and we are grateful for any insight you feel able to offer.
Can you help with 1 of our 2 surveys...or perhaps both
-
Perhaps you were close to someone in the construction industry who took their own life.
-
Or perhaps you were once in a difficult place yourself, but survived it. Your experiences as a survivor could help others.
NOTES ABOUT THE SURVEYS
-
As brief as possible - Long enough to provide common behavioural patterns.
-
Most questions use drop-down menus - Just click an answer.
-
No personal details required (nor those of deceased) - We are looking for behavioural and situational patterns.
-
The final report will be free to access - Sent to relevant government bodies, construction firms, and trade organisations.
-
If we can understand more about suicide in the construction industry - we can develop systems to identify those struggling.
Current research appears to be based on death statistics - we need to go deeper than numbers.
Thank you for taking part.
This survey is about those who survived
This survey is about those we have lost
