When Falls Are Not Just Accidents: What Korea’s Construction Data Cannot See
The construction industry is one of Korea’s biggest employers, with around two million workers labouring in all weathers to improve living standards for all of us. Yet, this vital industry also carries one of the highest accident and fatality rates of any sector. Authorities divide construction site accident data between public and private projects. Although public projects slightly outnumber private ones, collectively, there were approximately 6,180 accidents reported in 202

Will Cocaine Save Daegu’s Young People from Parkinson’s Disease?
Daegu now holds a strange new title: Korea’s cocaine capital. Yes, you read that right. According to a national wastewater analysis, the city beat out even Seoul for cocaine traces in its sewage. But before anyone starts popping champagne corks over their city’s new party image, there’s a darker current running just beneath the surface. Because while Daegu may currently be riding the white wave of cocaine, it is methamphetamine, not cocaine, that could shape the city’s neurol

ADHD, Substance Use & Workplace Safety in Construction
In my previous post, I discussed the risks associated with individuals taking ADHD medication while working on construction sites due to the potential adverse side effects of these drugs. As a follow-up, I wish to highlight additional risks related to the combination of ADHD medication and illicit substances such as cannabis. While these risks are not exclusive to individuals with ADHD, they are particularly relevant as those correctly diagnosed with the condition typically h

COCAINE & CONSTRUCTION
Cocaine-related deaths continue to rise across England and Wales. Snorting cocaine (and other drugs) can result in a condition often referred to as Coke Nose where the nasal septum (a thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils) is perforated or destroyed. This can lead to congestion, nosebleeds, loss of smell senses, and a collapse of the nasal bridge. This damage is not limited to cocaine, but will also occur after methamphetamine use, albeit with slight

Does receiving a clinical diagnosis of a mental illness represent being given a dangerous label.
I wrote this paper in 2012 - today it seems more relevant... Seeking Relevance? Here I look at the stigma of dangerousness attached to those with mental illness. I recognise there are a wide range of mental illnesses, all of which are beyond the parameters of this document which has a slight emphasis on schizophrenia. The discussion will introduce a number of serious crimes and show how those committed by mentally ill offenders’ have been sensationalised and how one mentally

SHOULD WE LEGALISE DRUGS?
Believe it or not, there is quite a strong lobby to legalise/decriminalise drugs in the UK; mostly marijuana; despite its clear links to mental illness. Tobacco companies are heavily invested in marijuana and some misguided politicians believe it could be a significant contributor to the exchequer. In the United States, a pattern exists in that those states which legalised medical marijuana, then went on to legalise recreational marijuana within a few years. Central ar

TOBACCO & MARIJUANA – hand in hand!
The link between lung cancer and tobacco was established by British scientists in 1950. However, that did not result in safer cigarettes, it led to more aggressive marketing. One group targeted was pregnant women. The tobacco industry accepted that smoking during pregnancy resulted in “lower baby birth weight” i.e., smaller babies. Winston produced their “Win Win Win” slogan – “An easy labor, a slim baby, and the Full Flavor of Winston.” Philip Morris produced a brand c

MARIJUANA & VIOLENCE
All terrorist attacks in recent times have been committed by persons who were marijuana users. None of them have ever been linked to any known terrorist organisation. If we consider two British born "terrorists", Salmen Abedi (Manchester Arena (Ariana Grande) attack), and Khalid Masood (Westminster Bridge - murder of a police officer); both were popular kids in school, liked football and in the case of Masood, academically gifted. However, they both followed a similar

HEROIN or MDMA???
Young people death data... This was a great lecture on Heroin using, Drugs: The Dark Side course materials. In one section I introduced the England & Wales Death Data which clearly shows a rise in mortality in people between the ages of 40 and 70, which suggests people turning to illicit drugs as a form of pain management, as the NHS reduces Opioid prescriptions to avert the addiction crisis we see in the US. Other deaths in this demographic will include Generation X; t

ADHD – MARIJUANA & VIOLENCE
ADHD – MARIJUANA & VIOLENCE People with ADHD, can be attracted to marijuana, because they believe it helps them better manage symptoms of anxiety, without the prescription medication. ADHD brains have lower levels of dopamine, thus the over-release of dopamine created by marijuana, will appear to compensate the shortfall. A 2018 article in the Guardian Newspaper stated that almost 75,000 children, aged between six and 17, had received ADHD drugs in England, in 2017/18.
